356 for your time.
Wife and I are looking to road trip from NY down to Savan nah, Charleston, Hilton Head, etc in February. My plan is to burn down 95, stay in Savannah for two nights (first night just to crash from all day driving), then slowly head back north for a couple days staying a night here and there. My wife flew into Charleston once for less than 24 hours ( for a bachelorette party), but besides that neither of us have been down that way. I wouldn’t mind checking out the Outer Banks, NC on the way back up, if time allows. Haven’t been there in a couple years. Taking my truck, so 4wd is available for beach access and any cool, scenic stuff nearby. A look on google maps shows there are some dirt access roads around some spots along the GA/SC border.
Plan is to just go day by day, eat and drink and tour around and take pictures . Any thoughts/ recommendations/etc appreciated!

There’s an Outer Banks community called Carova that’s only accessible by beach (or water). As I understand it’s pretty scenic. The Richmond area has tons of historic sites and lots of good microbreweries if you’re into either of those.
Also, if you end up bypassing Richmond on 295 instead of staying on 95 through the city, the stretch of 295 through the city of Hopewell is a giant speed trap and they primarily target out of state plates, so keep it at 70 through there.

A lot of people that I know like Oak Island in NC, and I think that you can drive on the beach there. Haven’t made it there myself. I like going to Charleston/Mount Pleasant/Sullivan’s Island for the beach experience myself.
Assuming that you are coming from eastern NY, the only thing to recommend is trying to hit DC mid-day otherwise it is painful. If coming from western NY, avoid I-95 as long as possible.

Regarding outer banks, depends on how you want to spend your time. It’s beautiful to take the various ferries out of New Bern, and through the various towns, but it’s a couple of long ferry rides. Once there you can buy a beach travel pass at the national park. But, it’s cold this time of year and fairly deserted.
It you head up the eastern shore of Maryland there are some nice towns, and I always recommend Annapolis.

I recommend venturing off of 95 towards Beaufort to see the two church ruins and Fort Fremont. Fort Fremont is an old fort completely open to the public(No rangers, you can explore everything there) with a small beach on the side. The two church ruins are St. Helena Chapel of Ease(on the way to Fort Fremont) and the Old Sheldon Church ruins, they both are beautiful spots. While in Beaufort, if you are hungry, I would check out Jason’s. It’s a hole in the wall soul food place, and it’s absolutely incredible. The shrimp and okra(one dish) are out of this world. Hunting Island is also out that way as well, and worth the visit while you’re there.

I’ll check that out, thanks! And I’m thinking about driving down on a Sunday to avoid DC rush hour traffic. Timing usually sucks when leaving NY around 4-5AM.

Carova is cool. I’ve been all the way up to the NC/VA border on the sand with my old Jeep years ago.
